Cleansing & Charging Crystals & Stones

Cleansing & Charging your Crystals & Stones

There are many ways to cleanse your Crystals and many reasons as to why you should do so. I just thought I would give you a few ways to do so, and some quick tips to help the beginner, or streamline the process for those of us used to doing it ritualistically. I’m going to be referring to crystals mostly, as they tend to be more delicate than stones, but all of these methods work for stones as well. And don’t be afraid to experiment with a method you haven’t used before, you never know how well it could work!

Sea Salt

Sea salt is one of the most common and effective ways to cleanse your
crystals. You can either use sea salt with or without water to cleanse them. Some stones should not be placed in sea salt water so if you choose this method please be sure to check to make sure your crystal or gemstone can be put into water. A good rule of thumb about this, is the stones that are harder and more glass-like (quartz or fluorite) are often times tolerant of water and the softer stones ( selenite, malachite or opals) that are more like rocks are not. Another good tip to know is generally speaking crystals that end in - ite - are
not good for cleansing with water.

If you decide to use the water method, place a tablespoon of sea salt in a tablespoon of water, I  like to use natural spring water for this, and leave the crystals in the sea water for 24 hours. If they have points be sure to place the points down as to release the negative energies back to mother earth.

Both methods of cleansing with sea salt is very useful and works well, one last thing to mention though is be sure to use natural sea salt not regular table salt because regular table salt contains minerals such as aluminum and other minerals. Also when using this method be sure to use a glass container not metal or plastic to hold the sea salt and your gemstones in.

TIP: Amethyst is best cleansed several times in sea salt water before charging in the MOON, as it is a very absorptive stone.

Moon Cycles

I almost always use this method to clear and charge my crystals. The moon light from a full moon is especially powerful at cleansing your crystals and recharging them. I suggest putting them outside on the night of the full moon and taking them back into the house before noon at least because after the noon day sun it becomes draining to the crystals energies. You can also place them outside during a new moon and cleanse them that way. A windowsill works just as well, if you live in the city or have an apartment, so just set them where the light will shine on them as long as possible.

TIP: When charging via the Moon, set them out just after sun set, and leave yourself a note to re them in the morning when you wake up to limit sun exposure. Use the night of the full moon for charging with the purpose of using for others, and the new moon for the purpose of self use…I find it works better.

Sun Light

The Sun can be a very strong energetic way to cleanse your stones, but it can also be draining to them if left out for too long. This system works very similarly to the Moon cycle, for 12 hour periods of charging. Make sure if you’re Sun charging you put them in direct sunlight, and that you have them there from sun rise to sun set. I like to focus my charging around the full moon nights as well, helps keep track of when you need to charge.

TIP: When charging with the sun, make sure the Crystals are in full sunlight from sun set to sun rise. Also, I tend to use the days around the full moon so that I charge all my crystals on schedule. There are some stones that should never go in the sun, they will be faded or damaged. These stones include: Aventurine, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Beryl, Citrine*, Kunzite, Sapphires, Fluorite, Rose Quartz, Smokey Quartz

Mother Earth

You can bury your crystals in the earth and leave them there for 24 hours. Crystals and gemstones come from the earth so when you use this method it is replacing them in their natural state, and they will then return to their original natural sate of neutrality. Be sure to mark your crystals where you bury them as to not loose them and also remember that the earth contains moisture so for those stones that should not be put into water it could affect or scratch them.

TIP: Even if you live where you can easily use your backyard to bury them, I still recommend collecting earth where you know the earth is as pure as possible, and using a container. This makes sure you know where your crystals are, and keep unwanted moisture or materials from scratching or damaging them. Plus…don’t need the neighborhood dog digging up your crystals prematurely.

Running Water

This method is great for those crystals that can withstand the water and you are in a rush to clean them. Simply place the crystal under the running tap water and close your eyes imaging all the negative energies that the crystal picks up are being washed down the drain by the running waters. When you feel the change in the crystal, which might feel like a tingle or simply your mind clearing
then the crystal is cleansed.

TIP: Cold water cleanses the best I’ve found, and if you can, find a natural spring or stream to do it in.

Smudging

You can use sweet grass, sage, or even incense to smudge your crystals. Simply pass the crystals through your smudging stick or smoke from an incense and it will be cleared of negative energy. The Native Americans use smudging as a way to clear and cleanse many things including crystals.

TIP: Smudging can leave residue on your crystals, so don’t be afraid to use a very lightly dampened cloth to clean them off after about 24 hours.

Citrine

Citrine is a stone that never needs cleansing of it’s own, in fact having citrine with other crystals and gemstones will help you to keep those gemstones cleansed. You can also place your other stones on a citrine geode or basket full of citrine tumbled stones for 24 hours and the citrine will cleanse the stones of unwanted energies.

Candle Flame

You can also cleanse your crystals tossing them through a candle flame. Be sure that they land on a pillow of some sort on the other side as not to get broken or harmed and remember that some crystals may get damaged with this method but I included it here because it is generally a safe and effective way to quickly release all the negative energies your crystals have picked up.

TIP: While this is a viable method, I don’t recommend it unless you have good aim, a large candle, and a safe place to do so. Also, any stone that has a lighter color to it, will be damaged, I only recommend using this method with darker crystals and stones.
