The term 'psychic' is generally used in context of a person who has the ability to recognize things that are hidden from the five basic senses. In other words, psychic powers comprise of the knack to sense something through the use of extra-sensory perception. While some people are blessed with extraordinary powers at birth, there are others who develop such powers by constant practice and training. Psychics and their powers are often met with skeptical glances, but exist nonetheless. There are different types of psychic powers in this world. Some psychics might have all of them, while others might be blessed with one or two only. Read on to get a list of the different types of psychic powers.
Types of Psychic Abilities
Animal Telepathy - The ability to communicate with (but not command or influence) various kinds of creatures. Think "pet psychic". Its a less commonly known ability to communicate telepathically with animals. Also called "pet psychics," these people are claimed to have a psychic connection with the thoughts and feelings of animals. Some people believe that people who excel at training animals tend to have this form of telepathy without realizing it.
Astral Projection - The ability to leave one's body and travel in spirit to another location. The ability to cause your conscious awareness to be in a position outside of your physical body. It is also referred to by the literature as an out-of-body experience (OBE). Experiencers of this psychic phenomenon report seeing their body on an operating table and watching events unfold as medical technicians work to revive them. Some experiencers wake up later and to everyone's astonishment, they are able to describe those details to medical staff.
Aura Reading - The ability to see the energy fields that emanate from living beings. Psychic ability can often reveal itself throught the seeing of auras. The ability to figure out the energy that originates from living beings. People with such psychic ability can often reveal much about the person by seeing his/her aura. This is the perception that allows a "sensitive" to perceive a disturbance in the air surrounding an individual, animal or object. Auras are defined differently by different people, with some referring to them in the spiritual terms, while some researchers refer to them in purely scientific terms. Whether these disturbances are caused by spirit or by electromagnetic radiation, reading auras is a very common psychic ability.
Automatic Writing - Writing through the subconscious mind without conscious thought or through the guidance of an outside intelligence. A technique that many clairvoyants use to pass information from the spiritual world through their subconscious mind and onto paper. The theory is that the psychic's hand is ultimately controlled by the outside intelligence.
Channeling - Channeling is the power to act as a channel, so that a spirit can communicate using your body. It is noted as a process of receiving message from spirits. Associated with mediums, this is the ability to act as a channel or vessel for an outside intelligence. Its similar to automatic writing, except instead of the outside spiritual intelligence controlling the psychic's hand, it take over the vocal chords of the psychic. People who have this ability are called "mediums" because they serve as a medium or vessel, for communication to take place with the invisible entity.
Clairaudience - Put simply, this type of ability is used to hear what is "inaudible". For example, someone with this ability could be a thousand miles way and "hear" a loved one's cry of distress. Clairaudience is the psychic power related to 'hearing'. People who have such a capability, can hear voices from different time or places, which are inaudible to others. Clairaudience is very similar to clairvoyance, except it is focused on the ability to hear things that are normally inaudible to regular hearing. This does not refer to hearing voices of invisible spirits; instead, it is the ability to hear the voices of people who are very far away from the psychic.
Clairalience - is the power of 'smelling'. People who have clairalience have the ability to smell aromas and odors that come from a spiritual source.
Clairknesis - is the term given for the ability to 'feel' the angels and spirit around a person.
Clairvoyance - Clairvoyance or "clear seeing," is the ability to see something mentally that you are not around to eyewitness. The event may have occurred in the past, or may be occurring in the present. Some other forms of this ability are clairaudience (hearing), clairsentience (feeling, touching), clairalience (smelling) and claircognizance (knowing). Usually confused with Precognition, this ability actually has much more in common with "Remote Viewing", True clairvoyance is not the abilitly to see into the future, but the psychic ability to see visions of that which is hidden or far away. Clairvoyance is the term given for the ability to 'see' objects that are either far off or hidden. One of the rarest psychic ability, it takes a lot of time to develop and is generally kept secretive by people who have it. Clairvoyants can also visually see spirits and angels also. Clairvoyance refers to the capacity of a psychic to see visions of events, people and places that are far away, or outside of the normal perceptual range of the psychic. This is also the form of psychic ability most commonly referred to as "remote viewing."
Clairsentience - Clairsentience means the ability to sense subtle feelings, emotions or energy. In this instance, the psychic has an insight or 'knowing' of a hidden or forgotten fact. Its simply the awareness of a fact or piece of information that is hidden from the psychic. For example, if a psychic met someone for the first time and knew their name or their birthday, this would be an example of clairsentience.
Divination - A broad term that includes fortune telling, precognition, prophesy and other methods used in an effort to predict the future. Divination encompasses the more commonly known activities practiced by most of the commercial psychics such as fortune telling and prophesying. Divination is essentially the ability of a psychic to foretell the future.
Dowsing - Also known as "water witching", dowsing involves the use of a rod, sticks or pendulum to locate water or lost objects. Its an age-old art of using rods or sticks to locate objects. This was a technique used for many decades to locate water. Many older folks swear that it works, but no one can really explain why.
Empathy - This is not to be confused with empathy, in which we try to understand how others are feeling. From the root word "pathos," meaning "feelings," true psychic empaths have the ability to feel the emotions or even physical sensations of another person. This can happen with a person an empath is in close proximity to or at any distance from, someone to whom the empath has an emotional bond. The talent to sense the needs, drives and emotions of another. As with Aura Reading, psychic ability can often reveal itself through the development of empathy. Empathy means the ability to feel other person's needs and wants. Empathic people are able to pick on the emotions of others, even if they do not say. They do it by the mental and physical energies emitted out by a person.
E.S.P. - Extra Sensory Perception is the awareness of information about events external to the psychic that are not gained through the senses and not deducible from previous experience. Often used to describe clairvoyance, precognition, telepathy, etc...
Intuition - is the psychic power or sense to attain information without making an effort to know about it. It is generally a person's quick and ready insight, which is seemingly independent of any previous experience or observed understanding. Similar to clairsentience, this is the power or faculty of attaining direct knowledge or cognition without rational thought or inference. Its an innate "sense" of events, thoughts, activities or feelings of others that are outside of the normal human ability to perceive them. For example, someone with extraordinary intuition may have a very strong feeling that someone they just met has a drinking problem even though the person shows no outward appearance of being alcoholic. An intuitive person has a borderline psychic perception.
Levitation - The ability to cause one's body to hover off the ground. Its rare ability to levitate one's body above the ground. Levitation is reported in many cases of demonic possession, but it's also been reported in other spiritual cases, one of the more well-documented cases such as the case of St. Theresa of Avila during the 16th century, when witnesses reported seeing her levitating while she was meditating during mass.
Mind Over Body - Suppressing or mentally satisfying the need for water, food, or sleep. There is some debate over whether this is actually a psychic ability since many of those who are associated with this trait (monks, yogis, mystics, etc...) are not generally called "psychics".
Medium - is a psychic power through which people are able to listen to or observe spirits. These kinds of psychics often share a number of related skills and have a vast storage of energy from which to draw, but are often unable to practice their art alone.
Precognition - From "pre," meaning "before-hand," and "cognition," meaning "knowledge," precognition is the ability to know something before it happens. Precognition sometimes comes in the form of a strong feeling that something will happen, as a vision or occasionally in dreams. Quite simply, "knowing the future". However, since time is a dynamic construct, no one psychic can ever know every detail about the future. Usually this ability refers to knowing general outcomes of specific courses of action, with occasional flashes of detailed insight. Its the ability to foretell the future. This particular form of future viewing involves obtaining specific information about an event, rather than a visual "viewing" of the future.
Psychometry - Also known as "object reading", psychometry enables a psychic to pick up on psychic impressions (vibrations) left on an object by someone connected with it. Someone with this ability could use an unfamiliar object to reveal much about its owner. Psychometry deals with the ability to know about a person by touching the object he has touched. It is through psychic impressions or vibrations that such psychics identify the person and reveal about him. Its the ability of a psychic to perceive energies (also called vibrations or impressions) from an object. This ability has been portrayed often in movies and TV shows where a psychic touches an object and receives flashbacks about the person who last touched it.
Pyrokinesis - Refers to the ability to start fires with one's mind. This is a highly specialized form of psychokinesis. Just because someone has pyrokinetic ability does not mean that he or she has all forms of psychokinesis.
Retro-cognition - is connected with people who have psychic powers to see, hear and feel into the past lives.
Telekinesis - By combining "tele" and "kinesis," meaning "motion," telekinesis is the ability to move things by force of the mind or will, without physically touching the object. Also known as psychokinesis, the ability to move objects with one's mind. Telekinesis or psychokinesis is one of the most commonly portrayed psychic abilities in the media. It refers to the ability of a psychic to affect or move objects.
Telepathy - From the root words "tele," meaning "over a distance," and "pathy," meaning "feeling," telepathy is to communicate through means outside of the normal senses. Telepathy is sometimes referred to as "mind reading." The ability to communicate mind-to-mind with another.Telepathy is linked with people who have the potential to know what others are thinking. While the other person says nothing, a telepath is able to contemplate what he has thought.
